Frozen Tides and Geology

A Winter Geoheritage Field Trip during university reading week in the Cliffs of Fundy UNESCO Global Geopark.

February 19-20, 2026

Nothing says “I’m a Canadian Geologist” more than a multi-day geoheritage field trip on the Bay of Fundy in February. A winter geology field experience for up to 6 university students, faculty, or adult learners.

During this time of year – we are in the Mi’kmaw lunar season of Apuknajit “Snow Blinding Moon”. Learn more about the Mi’kmaw Moons.

Potential Activities

(Depending on weather conditions, tide times and interest.)

  • Drawing geology landscapes and objects
  • Sunrise low-tide experience: Photographs and intertidal geology
  • Ice cakes and coastal erosion: Field research opportunities.
  • Mineralogy and snow crystals: Quartz mineralogy and snow crystal photography. (blog link)
  • Winter track makers and 100 million years of fossil footprints
  • Museums and public education: interactive session
  • Geoparks and Geoheritage: Research and opportunities
  • Snowshoe hike
  • Geology at night – Astronomy 

Accommodation: Approx. $300 for two nights at local Inn
Transportation: Car pool or arrange your transportation.
Food: Eating at local restaurants, participants pay for own meals.

Thursday Feb 19

11:00 am – Drawing in Geoparks, at Five Islands Lighthouse Park

3:00 pm – Drawing in Geoparks, at Partridge Island and Crane Point

6:00 pm – Dinner at restaurant.

Friday, Feb 20

7:10 am – Sunrise at Wasson Bluff (arrive at parking lot 6:30 am)

7:30 am – 9:30 am: Walk along the beach at Wasson Bluff

8:30 am – Low tide photo at Wasson Bluff beach

11:00 am – Coffee and warm up at restaurant

2:40 pm – High tide photo at Wasson Buff beach
