Plein Air in Geoparks

Global Geoparks are places of geological and cultural significance, places where plein air artists and visitors can experience and find inspiration in Earth’s history. The Cliffs of Fundy UNESCO Global Geopark on the northern shore of the Minas Basin of Nova Scotia, is featured in the June/July issue of Plein Air Magazine.

Plein Air Festival

The Parrsboro International Plein Air Festival (PIPAF) attracts thirty artists from across North America (and the world) to paint the inspiring geology exposed by the world’s highest tides.

This year’s PIPAF events (June 17-22, 2025) included a public presentation by Dr. Tim Fedak, providing an overview of the region’s geology and historical examples of how art and science have both been inspired by the geology of the Cliffs of Fundy Global Geopark.

Gala Event

In the evening of Saturday July 21, the PIPAF Gala Event is when paintings are awarded prizes, and the public ticket holders have an opportunity to see and purchase the inspiring paintings created by thirty artists over the weekend.  For anyone interested in geology and art – the Gala Event is a wonderful experience. The artwork is then on display at the Band Hall and Art Lab on Sunday July 22.

Plan your trip to experience the beauty and geology of the Cliffs of Fundy during the Parrsboro International Plein Air Festival.
